Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass

General Principles

In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord. (1) When the size of the congregation or the incapacity of the bishop, priest, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by other bishops, priests, or deacons. If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, "the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose. In case of necessity, the priest may also depute suitable faithful for this single occasion (GIRM 162)."

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence. In all matters they should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop ( Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds for the Dioceses of the United States of America, NDRHC, no. 28). When recourse is had to Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, especially in the distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds, their number should not be increased beyond what is required for the orderly and reverent distribution of the Body and Blood of the Lord. In all matters such Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop (IBID).

All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine.

Before serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, individuals must receive training and permission from our Bishop.

The next training is Saturday, September 9 at 10:00am in the church.

Minimum requirements:

  • at least 16 years of age
  • fully initiated, practicing Catholic (baptized, confirmed, Eucharist)
  • if married, married in the Catholic Church

The Fishers of Men breakfast at St. Dominic Catholic Church is a twice-monthly gathering for men who appreciate a hearty breakfast, enjoy sharing laughs, and support one another's personal and spiritual journey. Our fast-moving, casual atmosphere provides a comfortable space for men to come together and build meaningful relationships with each other and with God.

Each breakfast begins with a delicious meal, prepared with care by our team of volunteers. Afterward, we dive into lively discussions on a range of topics related to our faith and daily lives. Our meetings also feature guest speakers and group activities, all designed to help men grow in their relationship with God and deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith.

But the Fishers of Men breakfast isn't just about food and discussion. We believe that our spiritual journey is not meant to be walked alone. Our group provides a supportive environment where men can connect with others, share their struggles and successes, and find encouragement to live out their faith in their daily lives.

If you're a man looking to strengthen your relationship with God, deepen your faith, and build relationships with other men in your community, we invite you to join us at the Fishers of Men breakfast at St. Dominic Catholic Church. From the moment people drive onto our parish campus, we want them to know they are loved, welcome, and wanted - whether a longtime St. Dominic parishioner or a first-time visitor. Our Hospitality Team is often the first face someone encounters when they come to Mass or attend a St. Dominic event. Our Hospitality Team members offer warm smiles, shake hands, and hold doors for all visitors and guests. They also help keep our liturgies flowing beautifully by assisting during the Offertory and Communion. These team members (usually wearing our signature blue Hospitality shirts) are easily identifiable and can help answer questions and direct guests wherever they need to go.

Please complete this short questionnaire if interested in joining our Hospitality Team!
